THE STRIP. Tread the glossy hardwood floors of this intimate gallery to pay homage to some of the world's finest modern and contemporary art in distinguished traveling exhibitions. The relatively small scale of the space ensures that you'll be up close and personal with the works on display. Past exhibitions have featured art by Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, and Claude Monet; several group shows of Impressionist works have also graced the walls with color and light. Connected to the gallery is an eclectic store where you can purchase unique books, stationery, ceramics, umbrellas, totes, and prints.

HENDERSON. The past is present again at this popular museum, which traces area development from prehistoric times to the modern era. Of particular note is the focus on American Indian groups (including Anasazi, Paiute, and Mojave), who left an indelible mark on southern Nevada's history; their pottery, housewares, and jewelry are on display. The history of gaming is the theme of another exhibition, beloved by tourists enamored of poker and blackjack. Step outside for a collection of regional flora and for transplanted historic structures, restored to their original conditions on "Heritage Street."

EAST LAS VEGAS. Located on the UNLV campus, Donna Beam Gallery presents an ever-changing exhibition of contemporary artwork and showcases both nationally recognized and new, local artists. The gallery is a quiet space, and it has no admission fee, which makes it a prime spot for times when you want to soak up a bit of culture.

WEST OF THE STRIP. "Thank you, thank you very much!" The King still lives at this museum, which showcases more than 2000 items from the world's largest private collection of Elvis memorabilia. The holdings include letters, jewelry, clothing, records, a speedboat, a 1955 Cadillac limo, and Elvis's famous blue suede shoes. Adding to the appeal are a variety of Elvis impersonators, who perform daily. Naturally, a gift shop supplies a wealth of take-home merchandise.

If the name doesn't pique your interest, the diverse collection of artwork in this 26,000-square-foot facility certainly will. A gathering of sensual paintings and sculptures, the Erotic Heritage Museum honors human sexuality in a tasteful, cultured way (unlike the XXX-rated porn palaces so abundant in Vegas!). It isn't the type of museum you find every day, but it's definitely an acknowledgement and celebration of our shared humanity.
